Cancer Research Institute

The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) is a vital force in the advancement of new immune-based approaches to cancer treatment, control and prevention. In the firm belief that discovery-driven science is the only way to find more effective and innovative approaches to cancer, CRI supports scientists at every stage of their careers: from graduate students to postdoctoral fellows to heads of major institutions. Thus, CRI funding ensures a continuum of scientific creativity all along the spectrum of experience, providing valuable support to today's leading researchers while also cultivating the next generation of pioneering minds.

Expert scientists including Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences guide all of CRI's funding decisions. Only the most compelling and competitive research projects are selected to receive CRI support. Former CRI grantees have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, head major cancer centers, and make breakthrough discoveries that are saving lives.

An investment in CRI goes a long way. With one of the lowest overhead expense ratios among non-profits, CRI's donors can be certain their gifts will make the most impact. CRI consistently receives high marks from charity watch-dog groups, including the American Institute of Philanthropy and the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation and is the leading advocate and fundraiser for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. More than 85% of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disease also known as juvenile diabetes) and type 2 diabetes (a metabolic disorder also known as adult onset diabetes). Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes is a disease that strikes children suddenly and makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin for life. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it remove the constant threat of devastating complications such as kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. While diagnosis most often occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well.

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.16 billion to diabetes research, including more than $137 million in FY2007.

Habitat For Humanity

The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. About 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless, according to the United Nations. These people are increasingly urban residents, and every week more than a million people are born in, or move to, cities in the developing world. Today, a billion people—32 percent of the global urban population—live in urban slums. If no serious action is taken, the United Nations reports that the number of slum dwellers worldwide will increase over the next 30 years to nearly 2 billion.

In the United States alone, 95 million people have housing problems. That's one third of the nation. These problems include payments too large a percentage of their income, overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness. Throughout the world, people live in inadequate housing, and Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for those in need.

The Foundation of the American Thoracic Society

The Foundation of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization established in 2004 to raise funds for the ATS Foundation Research Program. As the Foundation has grown and expanded, it has added three additional program areas to its grant making portfolio: MECOR (Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research) courses; ATS Assembly Projects in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, and clinical education and training initiatives. Together these programs are central to the ATS's mission: the prevention and treatment of respiratory disease through research, education, patient care and advocacy.

Led by its Chairman, James F. Donohue, MD, Professor of Medicine, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, University of Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Foundation depends on the financial support of individuals, corporations and foundations for its success. Among the Foundation Trustees are scientists, clinicians, and representatives of industry and patient advocacy organizations.

Samantha's Friends

The mission of Samantha's Friends, a non-profit organization, is to help individuals challenged by disabilities such as autism, stroke, combat injuries, and other catastrophic illnesses, gain independence and companionship with the assistance of a service canine.

Samantha's Friends was originally founded in 1996 by Eddie Perley as a fundraiser for Samantha Bozza, who suffered a brain aneurysm caused by an arteriorvenus malformation, or hemorrhage, in her brain when she was only 15 years old.

After a close encounter with death and many years of rehabilitation, Samantha now reaches out to help and inspire individuals in all walks of life with her kind, generous and enthusiastic spirit.

In 2004, Samantha was honored as the very first recipient of the "Woman of Achievement Award" in the state of Florida and was also named a "Woman of Excellence" for 2005-2006, in honor of her work helping others.

Although Samantha currently owns and operates a "Curves for Women" workout facility in Florida, her true passion is her foundation "Samantha's Friends" created in her honor.
